Spirituals & Shout Songs from the Georgia Coast by the McIntosh County Shouters
Smithsonian Folkways has released Spirituals & Shout Songs from the Georgia Coast, a new album from acclaimed upholders of the African American ring shout, the McIntosh County Shouters, who keep the faith, form, and fervor of the generations-old tradition rooted in their small community of coastal Georgia. The collection, a co-production with the newly opened Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, marks the group’s first album in almost 35 years since their debut 1983 Folkways title Slave Shout Songs from the Coast of Georgia. Through their classic shout songs and spirituals, the Shouters beckon us to remember the past while envisioning the future of the African American cultural legacy.
